The best laundry takes time and thought to plan out. This is because a successful and efficient laundry takes more than just great machinery. There are several aspects that need to be accounted for that, if overlooked, could cause issues, increase operational costs, and decrease linen throughput.
Talk to a professional
Take the time to talk to laundry professionals. They will share with you their expert knowledge and experience, and be able to create an effective floorplan design for your laundry. A professional laundry design will ensure an efficient and hygienic laundry that will optimise operations, and therefore, costs.
Scaled Drawing & 3D Render
The design should be to scale so that machines, storage, space for movement and trolleys, and designated sorting and folding stations can be planned for. The drawings should also include where the drainage, water and power supplies are located, as this will also impact where your machines will sit. Our Project & Design Team uses CAD, a design software to create 2D drawings as well as 3D renders, giving you a real feel of what your laundry will look like.
Ventilation, Power and Water Supply
Another reason why laundry design is so important is to learn whether the existing space has the correct utilities in the correct location, or if it’s a new build, planning these from the beginning, minimising any changes later.
There needs to be enough power for the machines that will be installed, as well as enough power outlets in the right locations. Older buildings can sometimes have a smaller amount of power, which can pose a challenge.
Without the right sized water pipes, your washing machines may not get enough water, adding to the machine fill time. Proper drainage is also required to allow for significant amounts of soiled, chemical-infused water exiting machines.
Good ventilation is essential for a safe and efficient laundry. Dryers require air coming in and air going out to perform their function. With incorrect or poor ventilation, the exhaust air can’t escape as it should. This increases the risk of fire, as well as increasing the level of carbon monoxide in the room.
Hygiene
The cleanliness of any laundry should be a priority, but it is particularly important for industries such as healthcare, aged care, hospitality and accommodation that have to comply with the Australian Laundry Standards AS/NZS 4146:2000. The layout of the laundry plays a significant role in infection control. This should also be worked into the laundry design.
