Whether you realise it or not, there are so many different businesses that require a successful communal laundry room or communal laundromat. Whether it’s an apartment complex, a hotel, a holiday park or anything in between, having a space for people to clean their clothing is crucial for the success of a number of businesses across a range of industries.

If you’re looking to ensure a successful communal laundry room, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

This is our comprehensive guide to setting up a clean, comfortable and successful communal laundry that people will actually want to use!

Close Is Best

We know that if you’re in a large apartment complex or a big hotel, it can be hard to choose a spot for your communal laundry that is close for everyone, but try and choose a spot that is convenient for guests and tenants.

Choose a spot near an elevator or by the staircase so that people don’t have to lug their laundry long distances just to get to the communal laundry room.

If you are in an exceptionally large building, it may be worth setting up a few smaller laundry rooms throughout the complex so that customers don’t have to walk too far with their washing.

Keep It Clean

No one wants to do their washing in a dirty laundry room, and keeping your communal laundry clean is key when it comes to setting up a space people actually want to use. If you’ve got a cleaner that regularly cleans the common areas of your establishment, you may want to get them into the laundry room regularly too.

Don’t forget to have bins in your communal laundry room, and get some signs kindly reminding residents to throw away rubbish and keep the space tidy to ensure it stays clean for everyone to use!

Keep Equipment Up To Date

When you’re setting up or upgrading your communal laundry space, you want to make sure that all your equipment is up to date and that it all works correctly. You don’t want to have your residents lugging their washing to the communal laundry only to find the machines are out of order or they are old and not working properly.

Keep your equipment up to date and get regular checks to make sure your communal laundry equipment is working at its best. Having equipment that functions as it should is a sure fire way to get residents to trust (and keep using!) your communal laundry room.

It Has To Be Easy

There’s nothing worse than difficult to use machines that are fiddly and time consuming – you really do have to make your laundry equipment in your communal laundromat easy! One of the best ways to do this is to have a pay by card set up so that your customers don’t have to have coins on hand to do their washing. Installing a card reader makes it super easy for customers to go in, do their washing and get back to their day-to-day lives without having to worry about whether or not they have coins.

If you do still have coin-operated washing machines, make sure you have a place for people to switch their notes to coins so they don’t have to raid their couch cushions for coins just to do their washing!

Make It Fun!

Let’s be honest, no one really wants to do their washing, but making your communal laundry space a fun one might make people more inclined to do their weekly chores. Make sure you’ve got loads of comfy seats, games for kids (or adults), magazines or coffee table books for people to flick through or even a free coffee station to help make a normally mundane chore a bit more exciting!

Having a fun communal laundry space is one of the best ways to get people using your communal laundry rather than heading out to outside laundromats (or to their parents house!).
